Designing Aidan

So last week I bought “What People Wore When” which is a handy illustrated guide to the clothing people wore in various countries all across time. After flipping through it I realized a few things, namely that for a supposedly medieval-type fantasy setting the clothing I keep drawing Aidan and Keres in is completely off, so I’m slowly going through and trying to determine what sort of clothing would be common.

Now, Aidan was born in the desert so I figured his preferred clothing would go along those lines and looked up all the desert climes.

The answer that I came up with was thin linen hose or leggings, a skirt, a thin linen shirt, and a reinforced leather doublet because of his tendency to get in fights. This also goes with his traveling with gypsies and doing lots of acrobatics and running from loyalists.

I didn’t really like the egyptian-styled skirt though, and decided that since he was originally Irish I should just go ahead and give him a kilt and other celtic clothing.

However my darling Emma pointed out that the longer skirt was probably a bit heavy and both overall looked too formal. We both agreed that the tall boots were far better than the shoes. So this third one is the result of that. I know the blue is a bit off, but I didn’t really want to make the Irish influence too obvious by going green, and when I tried orange/yellow he looked like a wasp. So… sorry.

I still think the kilt is super-sexy, and I like the bandoleer, but it doesn’t go with Aidan’s casual “I’m not a rebel spy, I’m a gypsy! Honestly! Plz don’t shoot me my wife will be pissed.” thing.
